Abstract Emerging technologies change organisations as we know them. Organisations that want to remain competitive in a changing environment, need to anticipate shifting behaviours of stakeholders and technologies. Technologies such as big data analytics, blockchain and artificial intelligence; as well as trends such as the Internet of Things are challenging common industry practices. These technologies challenge organisational design and strategic management and they make data more important than ever before.
Big data analytics empowers consumers and employees. This can result in an open strategy and a better understanding of the changing environment. Blockchain enables peer-topeer collaboration and trustless interactions governed by cryptography and smart contracts. Meanwhile, artificial intelligence allows for new and different levels of intensity and involvement among human and artificial actors. With that, new modes of organising are emerging: where technology facilitates collaboration between stakeholders; and where humanto-human interactions are increasingly replaced with human-to-machine and even machine-tomachine interactions. These disruptions to accepted norms require a change in approach to how we organise activities within and across organisations.
This book offers organisations a blueprint for how to adapt to these rapidly changing times by introducing a new model, the D2 + A2 model. This model, based on years of research, offers organisations a new approach to turn their existing organisation into a data business. It will help organisations to be ready for the data-driven and exponentially-changing society that is upon us.
Organisations in the not-too-distant future will unavoidably be involved in numerous interactions among humans and machines. This will lead to complex strategies and unexpected technical, ethical and social implications. Offering dozens of examples of industry leaders such as Walmart, Telstra, Alibaba, and Microsoft, this book explains how big data analytics, blockchain and artificial intelligence force us to rethink existing business models and to develop organisations that will be ready for these human-machine interactions. It offers governments, professional services, manufacturing, finance, retail and other industries a clear approach for how to develop products and services that are ready for the 21st century. This book is a must-read for every organisation that wants to remain competitive in our fastchanging world.
Stephan Janssens – Organizational Transformation & Blockchain Strategist
In The Organisation of Tomorrow, Mark van Rijmenam maps the landscape of today’s most disruptive technologies and presents a clear-eyed and actionable roadmap for putting data at the very heart of every strategic decision your company makes. If you’re looking for a compelling, practical guide to your own organisation’s future, there’s no better step to take than reading this book today.
The internet was envisaged as a decentralised global network, but in the past 25 years, it has come to be controlled by a few, very powerful, centralised companies. Blockchain is a technological paradigm shift that allows secure, reliable, and direct information transfer between individuals, organisations, and things, so that we can manage, verify, and control the use of our own data.
Blockchain also offers a new opportunity for humanity to fix some major problems. It can authenticate data, manage its analysis, and automate its use. With better data comes better decision-making. In this way, Blockchain can contribute to solving climate change, reduce voting fraud, fix our identity systems, improve fair trade, and give the poor an opportunity to improve their lives by monetising their (digital) capital. A world built upon peer-to-peer transactions and smart contracts can empower individuals and communities.
This book offers a fresh perspective with which to consider this transformative technology. It describes how Blockchain can optimise the processes that run our society. It provides practical solutions to global problems and offers a roadmap to incorporate Blockchain in your business. It offers a blueprint for a better world. Filled with easy-to-understand
examples, this book shows how Blockchain can take over where the internet has fallen short.
He is also the author of the book “Think Bigger – Developing a Successful Big Data Strategy for Your Business”, which was published globally in April 2014.

- Big Data is Dead, Long Live Big Data
Last year, Gartner took Big Data out of the Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies but that does not mean that Big Data is dead. On the contrary, Big Data has become more important than ever. New technologies enable organisations to do more with data than ever before and it is completely changing how we work and live. In this keynote, International Big Data Influencer Mark van Rijmenam will share with you three big data trends, including inspiring examples, that will dramatically change your business in the years to come and he will explain why Big Data is more important than ever.
- The Future of The Internet of Things is Distributed
The Internet of Things is radically changing our society and with the emergence of Blockchain, it has become a whole lot interesting. With the Blockchain, connected devices suddenly can be used in completely new ways, thanks to the usage of smart contracts that can be deployed on a blockchain and that can automate many tasks. Devices can start negotiating with each other, they can start making micro- or even pico-payments for services used and thanks to smart contracts, agreements are enforced automatically. Blockchain is revolutionizing the Internet of Things and in his keynote, Van Rijmenam will share insights how Blockchain will do so. He will provide best practices, examples and give you clear takeaways on how you can improve the Internet of Things using the Blockchain.
- Building the Future; One Block at a Time
We live in a world of accelerated change and the 4th Industrial Revolution is upon us. Disruptive Innovations such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, 3D Printing or VR/AR are being developed at an exponential pace. The common denominator of all these innovations? They produce data, lots of it, which can be used to create magical experiences that were unthinkable before. Now it is time to use this data to create products and services that will change the way you work and live, while ensuring your privacy, keeping personal information secure and allowing you to own your data. Let’s build this future together, one block at a time.
- The Collaboration Era – How to Thrive in an Exponential World
We live in exponential times and simply having a digital strategy focused on continuous innovation is no longer enough to thrive in a constantly changing world. In order to transform an organisation and contribute to building a secure and rewarding networked society, collaboration among employees, customers, business units and even things is increasingly becoming key. Especially with the availability of new technologies such as big data, blockchain and artificial intelligence, organisations now need, more than ever before, to focus on bringing together the different stakeholders in order to co-create the future. Big data empowers customers and employees, blockchain enables peer-to-peer collaboration, while artificial intelligence creates new human-machine interactions. In this keynote, Van Rijmenam will discuss how big data, blockchain and AI will change collaboration and in doing so enable a networked society.
- An Insurance for Disruption; Preparing for Tomorrow’s World
We live in an ever-changing world and the strategic challenge that organisations face is to continuously adapt their strategy to this constantly, rapidly and unpredictably changing environment. Technology can help organisations do so and enable leaders to be the change within their business (unit) to remain competitive. This keynote will discuss three of these technologies that can enable leaders to deal with the changing customer landscape and how they can innovate and lead the pack. These technologies are: Big Data Analytics, Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence. Together, these three technologies change how we do business and they are the holy grail of the organisation of tomorrow. Those leaders that understand these technologies can become a catalyst for creating and driving change within their business unit.
