Nigel Owens MBE

Nigel Owens MBE is recognised as one of the world’s best rugby referees.

Nigel Owens is widely regarded as one of the world’s top rugby referees. Highly respected in the sport, he has officiated many of rugby’s most significant matches. He also holds the distinction of being the only openly gay referee in professional rugby union.

His journey to the top, however, was far from easy. Before reaching the pinnacle of his career, Nigel faced profound personal struggles, battling with his sexuality, bulimia, and steroid addiction—challenges that led him to a suicide attempt. His autobiography, Half Time, is a candid and courageous account of his fight to overcome fear and prejudice, ultimately becoming one of the most respected figures in international rugby.

A sought-after and engaging after-dinner speaker, Nigel captivates audiences with his warmth, humour, and wealth of stories from his time on the pitch. A former comedian in South Wales during the 1980s, he brings a natural flair for storytelling, sharing unforgettable moments from his career. From Gavin Henson’s debut to clashes with Austin Healey, Lawrence Dallaglio’s mind games, the intensity of live televised matches, and even requiring a police escort in Auch, France—his anecdotes offer a fascinating glimpse into the world of elite rugby. He also provides unique insights into the infamous Heineken Cup quarter-final between Harlequins and Leinster in 2009, a game that sent shockwaves through the sport when Harlequins’ Tom Williams faked an injury using a blood capsule.
